Tangeum-dae (formerly Daemun-san) is where a great ancient musician named
Ureuk played the gayageum (a Korean stringed instrument) and lamented the
loss of his nation. Tangeum-dae literally means 'rock for harp plucking' and
has been designated Local Monument #4. Located three kilometers northwest of
Chungju City, this height sits on a cliff which stands above
the place where the Namhan and Dalcheon Rivers meet.
General Sin Rip fought a fierce battle with Japanese invaders here in 1592. Gently sloped, the mountain boasts
unique rock formations and dense forests. Designated as a Tourist Resort in 1989, the resort will be further
developed in the near future. Located in the area are the Monument for General Sin Rip, the Monument for
Musician Ureuk, Tan-geumdae Monument, Monument for Poet Gwon Tae-Eung,
Tangeumjeong Pavilion, Yeoldodae, the Monument for the War Dead, and an outdoor concert hall for the
Chungju Cultural Center.
